Your knee shouldn't be the reason you stopped.

It started as a niggle on the stairs, or a few kilometres into a run, and you assumed it would settle. It hasn't. Now you're planning around it — the route, the shoes, the days off — and quietly wondering whether this is just your knees now.

It almost certainly isn't. Knees are very treatable, and most knee pain isn't actually about the knee.

95–100% covered by extended health benefits

Does this sound familiar?

  • It hurts going down stairs more than up
  • It aches after sitting, and clicks or grinds when you straighten it
  • Running, squatting or kneeling brings it on, then it lingers
  • It's swollen or stiff the morning after you use it
  • You've had surgery — ACL, meniscus, replacement — and never quite got back
  • You've been told it's your age and to "take it easy"

When this isn't a physio problem. A knee that is hot, red and swollen with a fever, one you can't put any weight on after a fall, or one that has locked and won't straighten needs a doctor or urgent care today, not a physiotherapy appointment.

Why knees hurt when the knee isn't the problem

The knee is a hinge between two much bigger levers. When the hip doesn't control the thigh or the foot doesn't control the shin, the knee absorbs the difference — and it complains long before anything is structurally wrong. That's why resting it helps for a week and changes nothing.

Even where there is a structural finding — a worn meniscus, some cartilage change — the evidence is clear that how strong and well-controlled the leg is predicts pain far better than what a scan shows. Strength is the treatment, and it works at any age.

What we'd actually do

  1. 1

    Watch you move

Squat, step down, single-leg balance, and if you run, your running. The knee tells us where it hurts; the rest of the leg tells us why.

  2. 2

    Calm it down

Hands-on treatment, dry needling where it helps, and a short-term plan to keep you moving without flaring it — including what to do about the run you've got planned.

  3. 3

    Build the leg around it

Progressive strength for the hip, thigh and calf, usually on the reformer where we can load precisely. This is the part that makes it stay better.

How long it takes

Most people feel a real difference in four to six sessions. Getting back to running or sport properly — without it coming straight back — is usually a six-to-twelve-week programme, and we'll map it out with you at the first visit.

Who you'd see

What patients say

I started seeing Jaspreet at Joybody last year after a fall. She is very knowledgeable, patient and thorough. She explains everything well and tailors the treatment to my needs. The clinic is also a very calming and welcoming environment. I highly recommend booking with Jaspreet as I've seen real progress thanks to her guidance!

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need a scan before I come in?

Almost never. Knee pain is diagnosed by examination, and imaging often shows changes that aren't the cause. If something in your history or assessment warrants imaging, we'll tell you and write to your doctor.

  • Can I keep running?

Often yes, with changes — distance, surface, cadence or a temporary switch. Stopping entirely usually isn't necessary and sometimes makes the return harder. We'll give you a specific plan, not a blanket rest.

  • I've had knee surgery. Is this for me?

Yes. Post-operative rehabilitation is a core part of what we do, and the strength work after surgery is what determines how good the result is.

  • Is it covered?

As physiotherapy — typically 95–100% under extended health benefits.

Most new patients are seen within 24 hours.
